LEEDS UNITED V. "CITY".
UNITED GAIN THE DAY IN MEETING OF OLD FRIENDS
It was distinctly unfortunate that the weather conditions for the charity game at Elland Road between Leeds United and an eleven of the old Leeds City club should have been unfavourable. Quite early on a drizzling rain began to fall, and no doubt this interferred with the gate to a considerable extent. There was a fairly good crowd present at 2.45, however, and spectators were then pouring in at all entrances. This was only as might have been expected, for the "Socker" enthusiasts Leeds still have a warm corner in their hearts for the members of the unfortunate Leeds City team. Then of course there was some prospect of seeing some of the players who gained distinction for the Leeds City war-time team. There were many changes in the Old Leeds City players' team. Willis Walker was present but unable to play owing to injury, and Billy McLeod who was selected to play at centre failed to put in an appearance. Several of the other Elland Road favourites were unable to turn up at Leeds owing to the clubs with whom they are at present engaged being occupied with Cup-tie replays in the course of the week. The following turned out for Leeds City:- Jacklin (Leeds United); Baines (Rochdale), W. Hampson (Newcastle United); Bob Hewison (Northampton, Mooney (Newcastle United), J. Henderson (Rochdale); Pease (Northampton), Butler (Leeds United), J.Peart (Ebbw Vale), Hibbert (Bradford City), I.G. Sharpe.
Goldthorpe made a welcome reappearance in the United team, which was composed as follows: Down; Duffield and Frew; Stewart, Baker and Walton; Brock, Goldthorpe, Thompson, Lyon and Wood.
When the Lady Mayoress opened the game there would have been well over 6,000 spectators present. The first movement of note was started with a pretty pass by Goldthorpe which sent Wood away on the left. His centre crossed the front of the goal, and Brock coming up from the right completely missed his kick and also a chance of putting United ahead. Then the City came into the picture for the first time. Peart swung out a long pass to Sharpe, who raced down the wing and put in a good centre, which Frew cleared. The crowd divided their sympathies and cheered each team impartially. Leeds United did most of the attacking and there were several "near things". Thompson put United ahead with a fine goal shortly before half-time.
Half-time Score:- Leeds United 1 Leeds City Old Players 0.
The light was very bad in the second half, but play continued to be interesting. The City were having the better of play and at length Pease ran through on the right and with a hard shot which gave Down no chance he placed the Old Players on level terms. Then Brock with a tricky little run, made an opening for Lyon to place the United ahead about halfway through the second portion of the game.
RESULT:- LEEDS UNITED 2 LEEDS CITY OLD PLAYERS 1
